November 19 & 27 - Registration for MVLA High School District
8th grade parents should have received a package of information from MVLA High School District the first week of November with crucial registration information. Parents need to register their student with the MVLA district if they plan on sending their child to LAHS or MVHS as freshmen. Registration takes place at Egan on November 19th from 7:30 - 11:00am and 12:00 - 3:00pm. A second registration day is November 27th from 7:30 - 8:45am or 2:00 - 7:00pm. Please bring all materials outlined in the letter.
1. All 3 documents for proof of residency (picture ID, bank statement or vehicle registration and property tax bill or rental agreement - all 3 items required).
2. Family Data Sheet
3. Student Emergency Contact Information
4. Home Language Survey
5. Internet Safety Agreement
January 23 – Q&A with LAHS Principal and MVLA Superintendent, Egan Library, 9:00 am
Come and have coffee with Barry Groves (MVLA Superintendent) and Wynne Satterwhite (LAHS Principal). They will answer parent’s general questions about LAHS. It is an informal session with no set presentation but a lot of interesting stories about what to expect. Blach has a similar coffee with the MVHS principal.
Late January, Early February – Shadowing is available for students who are deciding between different high schools and wish to visit LAHS for one day (Monday, Tuesday or Friday) accompanied by a LAHS student. Contact Carole Isnard at LAHS to arrange. 650-960-8824
January 31 - High School Parent/Student Orientation Night at LAHS & MVHS
This is an informative evening sponsored by LAHS with an overview of the school’s programs. The event is from 6:30pm - 8:30pm and includes:
- LAHS jazz band plays as refreshments are served
- Introduction by Principal (Wynne Satterwhite), MVLA Superintendent (Barry Groves) and ASB president
- Parents/students receive their course selection sheet. This will be filled out by the parents/students and turned in to LAHS counselors visiting Egan on February 11th during first period.
- Divide into smaller groups and tour school, obtain department information from representatives and a Q&A session.
- There is an opportunity to meet with coordinators of Special Education, ELD (English Language Development), Athletics and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination).
Early February – Egan Orchestra visits LAHS to rehearse, see Band/Orchestra
Mid-February – Egan Orchestra performs with LAHS in “Strictly Strings” concert, see Band/Orchestra
Mid-February – Distribution of registration packets to Egan
Staff from LAHS will visit Egan to explain the overall course registration process to the 8th graders prior to registration due date. However, parents are welcome to contact LAHS counselors for guidance on which courses are best suited for their student. The LAHS Curriculum Handbook has the complete listing of courses.
February 7 – Los Altos High School AP/Honors Night
8th Grade and new parent AP/Honors Night, LAHS Eagle Theater, 6:30PM. Parents of students who are considering taking an honors or an AP class at the high school should attend this question and answer session. See LAHS 2007 AP/Honors presentation
February 9 – Egan band participates in LAHS Band Night, see Band/Orchestra
February 11– Completed Course Selection Sheets due
Completed Course Selection Sheets will be turned in to the MVHS/LAHS counselors available at Egan during 1st Period.
Late Spring
Student course requests are mailed home for confirmation. This should just be what your student registered for in early March. Check this over carefully to make sure it is what your student really wants to take freshman year. Changes can be made later, but with more difficulty than if it is done at this time.
May 14 – College Evening
Egan hosts an informative session in the Gym with experts on the college selection and acceptance process. 8th graders and their parents are encouraged to attend to learn more about what courses to take in high school and of the myriad colleges available to our students. The night is informative and reassuring.
Mid-August – Final class schedule is mailed home in the back to school packet
Note that the schedule is smaller than a full sheet of paper; more like an index card, so it may be stuck between pages.
August 12 –Meet the coaches/9th Grade/New Parent Information Night
August 13 - 9th Grade Orientation
This happens the week before school starts. Freshmen spend the day (8:00 am – 2:00 pm) getting textbooks, learning their way around LAHS, getting photos taken and student ID’s, buying PE uniforms and getting to know each other in small groups. These groups meet once per week for the first semester on Tuesdays for 35 minutes as a homeroom to ask questions. Try to plan your vacations so that your student does not miss this important day.
Week of August 11th – week before school starts – Marching band and most Fall sports begin practices
Marching band goes to Band Camp a week or two after school starts, leaving Friday returning Sunday.
August 18, 2008 – First day of school at LAHS
September 4 – Back to School Night at LAHS
This is very similar to Egan’s where just the parents attend and walk their child’s schedule, meeting the teachers and learning about their expectations and curriculum. Instead of meeting together in the gym to start, a video is shown during one period to introduce the support staff and programs. Before the 1st period sessions begin, various clubs and activities sell food and other items in the main quad.
November 6 & 7 – Parent/Teacher conferences at LAHS
Unlike Egan, parents choose up to 4 teachers they would like to meet with and are given a specific time to meet with those teachers. Tip: to ensure you get to meet with the teachers you want; when you get the conference information in the mail, immediately send it back with your teacher choices.
